They discuss some of the lessons you can learn from failing, and how best to get back up. Legendary entrepreneur Reabetswe Motsepe, and pastor and entrepreneur Bruce Msidi (who is visiting SA from Zambia) also join the show.

Stats SA has published its latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey results for the third quarter of the year, showing that South Africa’s unemployment rate increased marginally to 27.5%.

Transformation in South African business is a prominent topic of discussion amongst today’s industry leaders. It is undeniable – since 1994, progress has been slower than expected. According to Lebogang Tsele from SME South Africa, black business ownership in the tourism sector (one of the most transformed sectors in the South African economy) is at 20%, with management control at 50%. However in the creative industry, which includes marketing and advertising the figures are significantly lower. Our guests today are Busi Selesho, Surie Ramasary and Xolani Qubeka.

Considering South Africa’s economic conditions, it is not surprising that some entrepreneurs start businesses due to lack of employment and on the other end female entrepreneurs are growing in numbers, but without access to appropriate funding many start-ups will find it difficult to grow their businesses. Our guests today will be highlighting challenges faced by SMEs, the available opportunities and how SMEs can access them.

As Africa continues its recovery from the 2014 commodity price slump, concerns are emerging that unsustainable debt poses the next great risk to the continent. According to Brookings, the median debt-to-GDP ratio in Africa has increased dramatically in recent years, jumping from 34 percent in 2013 to over 53 percent in 2017. Debt levels now exceed 50 percent in 25 of the region’s 45 countries, compared to just 11 in 2013. Adetunji Omotola and Bryan Hattingh share their experiences about operating their businesses in Africa, and some of the challenges they have identified.
