The Voice SA

Austin Lurring who is currently studying music and performance art at AFDA in Durban North, grew up in Pietermaritzburg where he was the head of the choir at Carter High school. He talks to Arye Kellman about the very first time he watched the US version of 'The Voice' and when he first discovered - "Hey, I can actually sing".

The flamboyant Clemour Ngobeni who describes his unique style as a “mashup of electro-blues"; started singing in church while growing up in rural Limpopo. Clemour chats to Arye Kellman about his compelling childhood, how church taught him everything he knows about music and why entering The Voice SA is one of the best things, he’s ever done.

With titles such as being the lead vocalist of his varsity's jazz band, performing at the 2010 World Cup Fan Park, singing in the South African Youth Choir and winning a singing competition in Italy under his belt, Francis Bowers is certainly going places. He talks to Arye Kellman about what The Voice SA means to him as a contestant versus a viewer and how he is entering in to a new season of his life.

Richard Stirton from Cape Town was an enthusiastic sportsman at Rondebosch Boys High until he injured his back playing cricket and decided to pick up a guitar. He takes Arye Kellman back to that time and explains how he dealt with the situation of getting injured, and when that moment was when he discovered his love for music.

Robin Pieters who is a professional musician starred in David Kramer’s production of Orpheus in Africa at the Fugard Theatre, studied music at the Cape Music Institute and has done backup vocals for many famous South Africans. He has even opened for international acts like Tevin Campbell and Tamia. He tells Arye Kellman about being a back-up singer for 7 years and how he finally decided it was his time to shine and how auditioning for The Voice SA was an uncertainty in the beginning.

Zoë Modiga from Pietermaritzburg won a SAMRO music scholarship in 2015 to study anywhere in the world, but decided to put it on hold and brave The Voice SA auditions. She allows Arye Kellman into her world and talks to him about her immeasurably large family, G-d being the one who knows her the best in the world and what her biggest obstacle in life thus far has been.

Since finishing school at the Campus of Performing Arts in Kensington, Xanilee Hammond has been paying her dues as a working musician and vocal coach for children. She explains to Arye Kellman where her love for rick music comes from and what she is learning about herself through the competition journey.

Jonathan Grayson is studying sound engineering and music production, while gigging as much as he can on the side. Him and Arye Kellman discuss how tough it is being a part of The Voice SA but also what an amazing experience it is, and what made him take music seriously when he was much younger and in school.

Thapelo Lekoane from Alex in Johannesburg auditioned with Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car”, scoring herself a spot in Karen Zoid's team. Besides her experience on The Voice SA, she tells Arye Kellman about her mother and what role she has played in her life. Thapelo also opens up about how the nod from global duo Mary Mary for her “Shackles” rendition really affected her.
